Cardiovascular disease has been the leading cause of death in Taiwan. Acute myocardial infarction is especially the major reason for sudden deaths. However, this kind of tragedy is preventable. If people have found heart problems and received treatments earlier, the coronary artery disease can be less deadly. For safeguarding people’s health, we introduced the up-to-date VCT Scan machine equipped with 64 rows of detector that can reconstruct 128 images in one scan by the computer. This technique provides the best quality of image in the shortest time, and is highly sensitive and accurate to the detection of coronary stenosis. It is definitely good news for those who are worried about the occurrence of coronary heart disease.
A comparison between VCT and cardiac catheterization:

VCT Cardiac catheterization
Mode of examination Non-invasive Invasive
Time required ≦ 5 sec 1~2 hours
Image analysis Reconstructive 3D Multi-angle projection image
Accuracy High High
Potential complications Few More
Radiation exposure 6~15 mSv 1~10 mSv

Before the examination:
  • Fasting for 6 hours before examination
  • Reading and completing health education form thoroughly
  • Tachycardia patients would need oral beta-blockers under the doctor’s direction for image can be displayed in best quality

VCT process:
The VCT process is fast and convenient. First, the technologist will place a catheter placement unit in a patient’s elbow and have the patient lie on the padded table. When the heartbeat returns to normal rhythm, the contrast media will be injected into the patient’s body through the catheter placement. During the scan, patients might come through a temporarily ardor. Patients are asked to repeat breathing and holding breath by technologist’s instruction, and the scan would have been done in a short time. After the examination, patients will receive a VCT digital image disc for preservation and follow-ups in the future.
